Hi, I am a self-taught Liverpool based artist and I love to fill my paintings with explosive and vivacious colours with bold black outlines to depict shapes and patterns in the objects I choose to paint. I tend to use blocks of flat colours to emphasize the simplified and often distorted shapes I see in these subjects. My paintings often evoke expressions of beauty, ,joy, humour and amazement. I consider all of my paintings to be abstract but the subjects I work with are usually recognisable. I mainly use Acrylic paint and Indian lnk on card or canvas, and I work either from photographs I take or from images downloaded from the Internet, so all of my work is Studio based. I only started painting when I was 71 and quickly developed my present style. My major influences are Children's, Outsider and Urban Art but people like Hockney, Van Gogh, Lowry, Picasso, Lichtenstein and a thousand other known and unknown artists have also inspired me and given me ideas. I sometimes wonder if my style digs into my unconscious absorption of the bright colours, simplicity and strong outlines I encountered in the comics I devoured as a child!! I suppose I belong in an Urban Pop tradition of trying to take ordinary everyday objects and make them into works of art
Many of my subjects come from Liverpool where I live with my wife Elizabeth, who is a retired Anglican Priest. I also work on pictures encountered on holiday or from commissions, or from visiting family. We have three sons who are now grown up , one lives in St Helens, another in London and another in Brussels who is also an artist (much better than me!). They have three girls and one boy between them whom we are privileged to have as grandchildren.
I have Exhibited in Liverpool Cathedral and the Art in Liverpool Princes Trust events, as well as doing Art projects in Schools and for Community Groups. I also speak to Church, Schools and Community groups about my Artwork.
To look through my paintings just click on Gallery 1, 2, 3, or News and Projects, and you can then scroll through them at your leisure. I hope you enjoy looking at them and I would welcome any comments you may care to make on my entirely self taught efforts.
All of my paintings are for sale and I supply artwork on a commissions basis. If any of the images on this website appeal to you and you would like me to reproduce it for you, please let me know the image and the size you would like. I can then supply a quote and my procedures, so please get in touch with me by email or telephone. Remember the most cost effective way of buying original art is to buy it from the Artist!!
